Introduction

For many applications HFCs are the best refrigerants available. They combine safety in use with excellent energy efficiency and technical performance. While this unique combination of properties makes these products the refrigerant of choice for many in the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry, it is important that they are handled responsibly and leakage is minimised.
To encourage their responsible use, Mexichem Fluor fully endorses 'Responsible Refrigeration'. This initiative aims to minimise the safety, health and environmental impact of refrigeration systems through good system design, maintenance, equipment servicing and training of designers and engineers as well as through recovery and recycling. If refrigerants do not leak they do not have any impact on the environment.
In systems designed for low leakage rates, HFCs are currently the most environmentally acceptable solution available for a wide range of applications where non-flammable refrigerants are necessary.
In response to the need to further reduce environmental impact, Mexichem Fluor is developing a new generation of refrigerants that retain the excellent properties of HFCs but with lower GWPs. These will in part be based on HFOs (Hydrofluoroolefins) alone or in refrigerant blends with HFCs, where HFOs alone cannot achieve the required safety or performance standards. While not yet commercially available they deserve serious consideration as viable lower GWP refrigerants for use in a range of applications.
Even so, there are continuing roles for HFCs in a wide range of applications delivering safe and efficient refrigeration.
